Smart irrigation for residential areas in Tradition, Florida, USA
Tradition,in Port St. Lucie, Florida, is a splendid place to live: 3,358 hectares of developed land, green spaces, lakes, and parks for yoga, walking, running, or cycling. Over 5,500 people live in this idyllic enclave located in one of the U.S. states. However, Florida, particularly the southern region, has been increasingly affected by severe drought patterns in recent years, with erratic and insufficient rainfall. This situation has forced authorities to approve restrictive water use measures, including limitations on irrigating green and residential areas.

The challenge in Tradition was complex and multi-faceted:
- Controlling water consumption for irrigating extensive parks and gardens, vital for maintaining the community’s aesthetics and well-being.
- The need for a solution adaptable to a pre-existing infrastructure that was, at the same time, innovative.
- Managing the irrigation system in real-time for an agile response to weather conditions and restrictions.
- Significantly reducing the urbanization’s water footprint, in line with the urgency imposed by extreme drought and local legislation.
Automating a vast residential area surrounded by green spaces, replacing older technology that was inefficient and, crucially, aesthetically invasive, with unsightly metal cabinets that clashed with the luxurious environment.

Smart irrigation in Tradition: Aesthetics and autonomy
SPHERAG addressed this challenge with a smart irrigation solution that not only optimizes water use but also integrates harmoniously with Tradition’s landscaping.
With this installation, Tradition has reduced its water consumption by 47.79%, an extraordinary achievement that demonstrates the effectiveness of our technology in a water-stressed environment.

Our proposal differs from previous technology in several key ways:
- Compact and Discreet Atlas Devices: Unlike the bulky, metal cabinets used previously, SPHERAG’s Atlas devices are surprisingly small and discreet. Their minimalist design and reduced size allow for an almost invisible integration into the landscape, eliminating any negative visual impact. Currently, we have 62 Atlas devices installed, controlling 73 valves and 103 hydrants, precisely managing every green corner of Tradition.
- Integrated Water Cycle Management: SPHERAG facilitates pumping floodwater from garden areas to the canal during the rainy season. Conversely, it allows the use of this same water as an irrigation resource during the dry season, maximizing the efficiency and sustainability of the residential urbanization’s water cycle.
- Complete Energy Autonomy: SPHERAG’s solution is completely autonomous. It requires no external power supply, additional antenna deployment, or dedicated connectivity. This greatly simplifies installation and reduces operational and infrastructure costs for residential irrigation.
Real-Time Control: SPHERAG’s platform allows Tradition’s managers to control and monitor the entire irrigation system in real-time, from anywhere. This immediate response capability is crucial for adapting to unexpected rainfall patterns or fluctuations in irrigation restrictions imposed by Florida’s water authorities.

A new paradigm in urban and residential water management
The experience of Tradition, Florida, is a clear example of how SPHERAG’s versatility and adaptability allow us to tackle challenges in any sector where water is a critical resource. Our solution isn’t limited to agriculture; it extends to water management in residential areas, smart cities, tourism, industry, or livestock, proving that efficiency and sustainability are possible in any environment.
At SPHERAG, we’re committed to offering solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also environmentally friendly and aesthetically integrated.
Simple, smart, sustainable and energy autonomous, this is the new way of watering gardens at Tradition!
